I recently did a Facebook post on “Help Me Posts” and why they don’t work. I felt there was enough need here to expand this into a full blog post. Business storytelling should be the key to your business marketing. It’s the one thing you have that sets you apart from anyone and everyone else. Nobody has a story quite like yours. Nobody has the same experiences you have and by sharing those naturally with the world you draw people to you and your business with less effort.

Business Storytelling: Why “Help Me Posts” Are Ruining Your Business
The very second you make a “Please Help Me” post you’ve lost. You’ve just devalued everything you do, every product you sell, and your entire business.
Business Storytelling: The Psychology of It All
Let me break it down a little further so you can understand exactly what happens and the psychology of what you are telling people.
Why are you asking for help? You are telling your audience that you need them and this automatically turns people off. You have just come from a place of desperation. And you’ve made it ALL about YOU and NOT about THEM!
You’ve taken the “OMG this is the best thing I’ve ever seen” into “Eh, it’s not that great and I’m having a hard time SELLING it.” If you’re begging for sales then your product can’t be that good. Why aren’t people buying it? What’s wrong with it? Why would it work for me if nobody else is buying it? That’s what this post is telling people.
Business Storytelling: The Elusive Promotion
When you’re talking about being just a “Few Sales away from a BIG promotion…” every month you take away any sense of success you have told people you are having.
You just went from “I’m doing so well and everyone wants what I have.” to “I struggle every month to be successful and nobody is helping me.” Why would I want to join that team?
I once read someone share a post about how a year ago she double promoted and hadn’t promoted since and she really wanted to build to the next level so come and join my team with a discounted starter package (which was discounted last month and the month before and did I mention the month before for a limited time, oops nevermind it’s been extended… AGAIN)
So you haven’t promoted in over a year and I should let you lead my success story? People who are successful surround themselves with successful people. If I’m joining someone in something supposed to change my life I sure as HELL want to know I’m in good hands.
People in regular jobs don’t get promotions every month. They don’t get promotions every year even. So they have no understanding of how you’re going to promote yet again this month. And if you didn’t succeed last month chances are you won’t succeed this month either so why should they bother.
There’s already a negative connotation revolving around network marketing and direct sales in general. People are skeptical that you can sit on your couch and make money and it’s these kinds of posts that make people feel this way.
Business Storytelling: Help Them See It Happening
Making a post about a promotion and attaching so huge dollar amount to it is unbelievable for most of the audience you are talking to. They’ve never been given a $10,000 bonus so they aren’t going to believe you can achieve one either.
They think either you’re some poor shmuck being taken in by these big bad “MLM Pyramid Schemes” or you’re lying and are creating the big bad “MLM Pyramid Schemes” that are preying on their friends.
So how do you get them to believe its all possible? You show them. You share stories of your life. A wealthy person doesn’t have to flash cash around to show wealth. They show wealth by taking 12 vacations this year. They show wealth when they pay off they’re dream home or buy a brand new car.
When you’re starting out it doesn’t have to be all that big. People struggle to put food on their table and keep the lights on so, show them how you’re doing that with ease while playing at the park with your kids. Most people just need a couple of hundred extra dollars a month so, show them how that’s possible first.
Business Storytelling: A Real Life Example
Think of it in daily life guys and please don’t shoot the messenger. If you walk past a nail salon and there’s a lady dressed like a big huge bottle of polish out there with a sign that says, “Help me. Let me do your nails.” Are you going in there? Come on you know you aren’t. You are thinking to yourself “Well they aren’t any good or they wouldn’t need ME to come in there. I bet that lady does crooked nails that fall off in 2 days.”
That store would go out of business. As many have lately (but that’s another tale for another day.)
Social media is a great BIG BILLBOARD for you and your business. And people watch everything you do even when they don’t even know it. You have to create a story they enjoy watching. Share your daily life, your joys, your frustrations etc.. Then share how a product or a business is either changing something for you or enhancing something for you.
You can’t just throw one post up and call it good.
It needs to be intentional. It needs to be thought out. You need to think about how is this representing me. How am I coming across to people?
We all know Attraction Marketing is my thing. I talk about it all day every day and in my opinion, it’s the ONLY way to market. It banks on one simple thing. Psychology.
“Approach each customer with the idea of helping him or her solve a problem or achieve a goal, not of selling a product or service.” -Brian Tracy
Business Storytelling: We’re Back to Psychology
I freaking love psychology. It’s everything I’m fascinated with. I’m fascinated with it when I’m watching true crime (what’s making someone do that), or movies (how does this make me feel), or commercials (do I feel like I need this), or listening to music (super emotional in every sense) and even yes, scrolling social media.
If you don’t think about your audience and begin showing them your value they will not believe in you. If you don’t choose your words and solve problems for your audience they will not follow you. They won’t buy from you and they certainly will not care about that BIG promotion you are going for AGAIN!
You have to think about your audience more than you ever think about yourself. People buy things when they feel like it helps them not when it helps you. Why do they need what you are offering? Has it done something for you that you know it can do for them? Why should they gamble and join your team? Will it do for them what it’s doing for you? Do they feel confident you will care enough about them to help them be successful? Will you be a good teacher? And more importantly, do they want to do what you are doing?
